They say that one has a better chance of being struck by lightening than to win the Lottery. Well, here is a contest that perhaps has longer odds than that.

Earlier today, I posted this clip and then deleted it while I conducted more research which still confirms my earlier bewilderment about this offering. I know why these sponsors are conducting this sweepstakes, but I have a hard time understanding why anyone would seriously consider the GRAND PRIZE opportunity contained herein. Read the full details and ask:

What are the chances Downtown Los Angeles will record a precise temperature of 99 degrees on 10/31/10, the basic requirement for contestants to become eligible for the GRAND PRIZE? I have searched unsuccessfully for the true odds of that happening and the closest confirming data I can find is at http://bit.ly/cAv2YI where the record shows that the mean daily temperature in October for LA is 68.6, trending toward 61.8 for the month of November. I doubt if there has ever been an October 31 date with an LA temp even close to 99? If that has happened, then I would like someone to confirm the data and I will eat this post.

Despite the odds, thousands around LA LA Land will probably enter this sweeps, confounding the statisticians and the weather man and proving that optimism always trumps reality.

A rescue effort has been launched in hope of finding Abby Sunderland, 16, who set off her emergency beacon locating devices from the southern Indian Ocean early this morning.

Sunderland,
who had been attempting to sail around the world alone, endured
multiple knockdowns in 60-knot winds Thursday before conditions briefly
abated.

However, her parents lost satellite phone contact early
this morning and an hour later were notified by the Australian Coast
Guard that both of Sunderland’s EPIRB satellite devices had been
activated.

California Pledge (via Greenaprons’s Blog)

While this blogger’s crusade to resurrect the “California pledge,” or at least the memory of same, one wonders if the lyric is as true today as it was in the time in which the state’s school children were widely taught to recite this.

As a child we were taught the California Pledge, a Flag Salute to the California Flag. It is a sweet little ditty about California. It hasn't been taught in school for decades and I would like to share it with you. California Pledge I am a California Child, I love this golden state. Its mountains high its valleys wide its people good and great. I love the dear old pioneer that made us what we are and gave to us this golden state our Nations brigh … Read More

Mother, daughter share ‘fortune’ from ‘Wheel’

Winning thousands of dollars on a TV game show is certainly gratifying.

But for Janet Woessner of Brea and daughter Laurisa Quella of Placentia, the true joy comes in sharing the experience—and some of the winnings—with others.
